Initially greeted with enthusiasm upon its announcement during Disney‘s 2020 Investor Day, the ambitious project to bring Star Wars: Rogue Squadron to life under the direction of Patty Jenkins has encountered setbacks and uncertainties. However, recent statements from Jenkins suggest that the project may be back on track.
During an appearance on the Talking Pictures podcast, Jenkins shared insights into the status of Rogue Squadron’s development. With her involvement in a potential third Wonder Woman film no longer materializing, Jenkins found herself with an open schedule, paving the way for a potential return to the Star Wars universe.
“When I left Star Wars to focus on Wonder Woman 3, we discussed the possibility of my return to Star Wars after completing that project,” Jenkins revealed. “Following the change in plans for Wonder Woman 3, Lucasfilm and I resumed negotiations to finalize my involvement in the Star Wars project. Just as the negotiations concluded, the industry strike began, leaving me with the task of delivering a draft for Star Wars.”
The concept of Rogue Squadron, centered around the valiant exploits of Rebel pilots, had garnered significant anticipation. However, its progress had been hindered by unforeseen challenges.
Amidst a seemingly dormant period for Star Wars on the big screen, recent developments indicate a resurgence of activity, with multiple films in the pipeline and productions like The Mandalorian gearing up for filming. Jenkins acknowledges the complexities ahead for the franchise and expresses her commitment to Rogue Squadron’s development.
“While other directors have been working diligently, I am now fully focused on Rogue Squadron,” Jenkins stated. “The path forward is to ensure that both Lucasfilm and I are thoroughly satisfied with the project before proceeding.”
As excitement mounts for the revival of Rogue Squadron, cautious optimism prevails, acknowledging that the film’s realization hinges on tangible progress and eventual confirmation through official channels.
