Renowned actress Margot Robbie is diving into the world of film production once again, this time partnering with Hasbro to bring the beloved board game Monopoly to the big screen. The Oscar-nominated star, known for her roles in films like “Barbie,” will utilize her production company, LuckyChap, in collaboration with Lionsgate to shepherd this long-awaited project to fruition.
In a statement, LuckyChap emphasized the significance of Monopoly as “a top property – pun fully intended,” underscoring their enthusiasm for the endeavor. Lionsgate’s film chief, Adam Fogelson, echoed this sentiment, expressing the studio’s excitement to work alongside Robbie on what they anticipate will be her “next blockbuster.”
Established in 2014, LuckyChap has garnered acclaim for its diverse portfolio of films and television shows, including “I, Tonya,” “Promising Young Woman,” and “Saltburn,” as well as series like “Maid” and “Dollface.” The company’s mission is to broaden the scope of female-driven stories and empower female storytellers in Hollywood.
LuckyChap’s previous successes include the record-breaking 2023 hit “Barbie,” which grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide and received eight Oscar nominations. Additionally, their recent comedy “My Old Ass” premiered to positive reviews at Sundance and was subsequently acquired by Amazon for distribution.
Robbie and her producing team, which includes husband Tom Ackerley, are also venturing into the realm of R-rated comedy with the upcoming Christmas film “Naughty,” directed by Olivia Wilde. Furthermore, LuckyChap recently announced plans to adapt the long-running video game “The Sims” for the screen.
The journey to bring Monopoly to cinemas has been a long and winding one, with numerous attempts made over the years. Previous iterations included a comedy helmed by Ridley Scott in 2008, featuring a Donald Trump-esque tycoon, and a 2019 adaptation with Kevin Hart attached to star and Tim Story set to direct. The specifics of the new version remain undisclosed at this time.
The announcement was made during this year’s CinemaCon, a gathering of industry professionals and stars in Las Vegas. In addition to the Monopoly project, Lionsgate revealed plans for a fresh take on “The Blair Witch Project,” with horror specialists Blumhouse onboard to helm the production.
