How long is Lord of the Rings extended

by Barbara

Lord of the Rings is a beloved epic fantasy novel that has captured the hearts of readers for generations. When it was adapted into a film trilogy, fans were excited to see their favorite characters and scenes come to life on the big screen. However, many were surprised by the sheer length of the extended editions of these films.

The Lord of the Rings film trilogy was directed by Peter Jackson and released between 2001 and 2003. The theatrical versions of the films are already quite lengthy, with each one running around two and a half hours long. However, the extended editions take things to a whole new level.

The extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring clocks in at three hours and forty-eight minutes, while The Two Towers runs three hours and fifty-five minutes. Finally, The Return of the King is the longest of them all, coming in at four hours and eleven minutes. This means that watching the entire extended trilogy back-to-back would take over twelve hours!

So what exactly is included in these extended editions? Mostly, it’s just additional scenes that were cut from the theatrical version. Some of these scenes help to provide more context or background information for certain characters or events. Others simply offer fans more time with their favorite characters or expand upon certain plot points.

One notable addition to the extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring is the “Scouring of the Shire” sequence, which sees the hobbits returning home after their adventures and finding that their peaceful village has been taken over by Saruman’s forces. This sequence was originally cut from the theatrical release, but is a fan-favorite inclusion in the extended edition.

Other additions include more scenes featuring Aragorn and Boromir, which help to flesh out their characters and relationship. There’s also an extended version of the confrontation between Gandalf and Saruman, which provides more insight into their dynamic.

Of course, not everyone has the time or patience to sit through such lengthy films. However, for fans of The Lord of the Rings, the extended editions offer a chance to dive even deeper into this rich and magical world. Whether you’re watching for the first time or revisiting the trilogy after many years, the extended editions are sure to provide plenty of entertainment and new insights.
