Director Shawn Levy, known for his work on “Deadpool & Wolverine,” is reportedly a top contender for directing the fifth Avengers film. The film, initially titled “Avengers: Kang Dynasty,” has been without a director since Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed “Shang-Chi,” left the project in late 2023.
Levy’s involvement is not yet confirmed. Deadline reports that Marvel Studios is considering several other directors while awaiting Levy’s decision. Notably, regardless of Levy’s involvement, Marvel appears to be taking the fifth Avengers film in a new direction.
The original title “Avengers: Kang Dynasty” was dropped following the removal of Kang actor Jonathan Majors from the MCU due to his criminal convictions. This has fueled speculation that the studio might abandon the Kang storyline entirely rather than recast the role.
The upcoming Avengers film is expected to feature an ensemble of up to 60 Marvel heroes, including Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Simu Liu, and Karen Gillan, among others. While no retired Avengers, such as Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers or Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, were mentioned by Deadline, their return has not been ruled out.
This extensive lineup suggests the film may incorporate characters from the Fox Marvel films, Netflix series, and more. With “Avengers: Secret Wars” planned as the sixth Avengers film, it raises questions about how Marvel could surpass such a massive ensemble. There is speculation that “Secret Wars” might be split into two films to accommodate the large cast and complex storyline.
As we await further details, fans can look forward to “Deadpool & Wolverine,” set for release in July, which will showcase Levy’s capabilities within the MCU.
If Marvel Studios is seeking a fresh direction for Avengers 5, they might draw inspiration from some of the best Avengers stories ever told.
