Since the success of “Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel Studios has experienced a mixed reception with its subsequent releases. While films like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” achieved significant success, others, notably “The Marvels,” have not fared well, marking a low point for the studio.
Despite the underperformance of “The Marvels,” Marvel’s plans for an upcoming Young Avengers film remain unchanged, though fans have shown little enthusiasm following recent updates on its production.
Fans Lukewarm on Young Avengers Project
The concept of a Young Avengers film has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) strategy since the onset of the multiverse saga. However, progress has been slow, even as the studio advances into Phase 5. “The Marvels” hinted at a new Avengers lineup led by Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, but the film’s poor box office performance cast doubt on this direction. According to insider @DanielRPK, Marvel Studios plans to begin filming the Young Avengers in early 2025.
This announcement, however, has not sparked significant interest among fans. One major issue is the lack of an official roster for the new team. Aside from Kate Bishop and Kamala Khan, no other members of the Young Avengers have been confirmed. In contrast, the original Avengers team was introduced through standalone films, allowing audiences to connect with the characters before the ensemble movie in 2012.
The current state of the MCU also contributes to fan indifference. A series of lackluster releases in recent years led Disney CEO Bob Iger to reconsider their approach to the franchise. The potential Young Avengers lineup lacks major star power, and fans are still unfamiliar with the new characters set to become Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Shawn Levy Tipped to Direct Avengers 5
Despite the tepid response to the Young Avengers project, Marvel is forging ahead with plans for “Avengers 5,” which is expected to feature an expansive cast of 60 Marvel characters. Disney has not yet confirmed a director, but “Deadpool & Wolverine” filmmaker Shawn Levy is reportedly their top choice.
If Levy is selected to direct “Avengers 5,” it will be a significant addition to his busy schedule. He is currently working on “Deadpool 3,” which is anticipated to help realign the MCU, and is also deeply involved with Netflix’s “Stranger Things 5” as both a director and executive producer.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is slated for release on July 26, 2024.
