In the latest issue of Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin #3, the young hero encounters a series of brutal yet typical battles. As the night concludes, Peter returns home, proud of his accomplishments as Spider-Man. However, his late return only heightens Aunt May’s worries about his safety. With the tragic death of Uncle Ben still casting a shadow over their lives, Aunt May greets Peter with a stern, silent glare, underscoring the emotional weight they both carry.

This series takes readers back to Peter Parker’s early days as Spider-Man, a time when he was still grappling with his newfound powers and the heavy responsibility they entailed. Uncle Ben’s recent death adds layers of emotional trauma, affecting Peter deeply. During this period, Aunt May becomes increasingly protective, driven by a desire to shield her loved ones from further harm.

Though Peter’s superhero career is underway in Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin, the series is set before Norman Osborn’s transformation into the Green Goblin. Instead, the focus shifts to a new character, Nels Van Adder, a “Proto-Goblin” whose ties to Oscorp and subsequent experiments turn him into a hulking red menace, illustrating that he is not the true villain of his own story.

Marvel’s newest villain in Spider-Boy’s rogues’ gallery threatens to erase the hero’s life, breaking the fourth wall in a unique twist.

Despite introducing Van Adder, Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin features many classic characters. Fans will enjoy seeing Peter interact with Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn, long before their tragic fates unfold. The series also includes appearances by villains like Sandman, highlighting Peter’s attempts to resolve conflicts through dialogue as much as through his web-slinging prowess.

Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin #3 is available now from Marvel Comics.
