Apocalypse’s Brutal Return Ensures Krakoa’s Legacy Lives On

by Barbara

The X-Men’s transformative Krakoan era has concluded, but the legacy of Krakoa continues to resonate, as evidenced by Apocalypse’s recent actions. The once idyllic island that provided a sanctuary for Earth’s mutants revitalized the X-Men franchise. In “X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse #1,” the infamous villain, who experienced a significant evolution during the Krakoan era, emerges with a mission to find a successor—driven by the inspiration he drew from Krakoa.

Written by Steve Foxe and illustrated by Netho Diaz, “X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse #1” depicts Apocalypse initiating a contest to choose an Earth-bound successor while he leads a mutant colony on Mars. Addressing the contestants, Apocalypse references Krakoa and the potential it represented. He speaks of Krakoa as the embodiment of his vision, a dream that was ultimately shattered. Reminding the mutants of the loss of their utopia, he declares the return of “lean times” and underscores the need for a leader to make Earth safe for mutants once again.

The X-Men’s Krakoan Era: A Renaissance

In the early 2010s, the X-Men franchise struggled as Marvel focused on its Avengers titles. However, the launch of the Krakoan era at the decade’s end marked a significant commercial and artistic revival. Krakoa became a refuge for nearly all of Earth’s mutants, ending years of strife among humans who feared and despised them. During this time, mutants enjoyed a period of peace, no longer fighting for their survival, a point highlighted by Apocalypse. However, this golden era has ended, and mutants are once more dispersed worldwide.

Throughout the Krakoan era, many mutants underwent profound transformations in personality and perspective. Notably, former villains Magneto and Apocalypse saw significant changes. Once one of the X-Men’s most formidable adversaries, Apocalypse was notorious for using vulnerable mutants as his Horsemen, altering them completely. On Krakoa, Apocalypse experienced a change of heart, utilizing his abilities to restore mutant powers lost on M-Day. The Krakoan experiment demonstrated to Apocalypse, Magneto, and others that unity could achieve greater outcomes than conflict.

Krakoa’s Ideals Persist Beyond Its Demise

Although Krakoa no longer exists, the brutal contest orchestrated by Apocalypse ensures its principles endure. The island’s vision of a peaceful mutant existence will not be forgotten. Despite Krakoa’s fall, Apocalypse aims to revive its spirit in his unique, albeit harsh, manner. The X-Men’s time on Krakoa proved that mutants did not require messianic figures, yet Apocalypse clings to this mindset, even after his transformation on the island. Krakoa’s ideals continue to shape the Marvel Universe, affirming that its legacy will influence the X-Men for years to come.
