The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Lagos State Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, clarified an incident involving actress Laide Bakare, stating that she was stopped and fined for violating traffic laws.
In a statement shared on his verified Twitter handle, @benHundeyin, on Sunday, Hundeyin addressed the situation where Bakare alleged mistreatment by the police. According to Bakare, the incident occurred on Saturday along the Ikorodu Expressway after she was accused of driving in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Lane.
Bakare expressed outrage on her Instagram page, recounting how the police entered her vehicle and drove away with her 14-year-old daughter to an undisclosed location. She criticized the police’s actions, emphasizing the trauma inflicted on her daughter and condemning what she described as exploitation.
Responding to Bakare’s allegations, Hundeyin clarified that she was stopped for violating traffic laws related to the BRT lane. He explained that Bakare refused to comply and chose to create a scene, including leaving her vehicle unattended during the incident.
“The officers were following protocol and proceeded to take her vehicle to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) office,” Hundeyin stated. He further mentioned that Bakare eventually paid a fine of N70,000 for the offense and was issued a receipt.
Hundeyin emphasized that no physical altercation occurred during the incident and underscored that Bakare’s vehicle was returned to her without any harm to her person.
