Insomniac Games, renowned for its Marvel’s Spider-Man series, is taking on a new challenge with Marvel’s Wolverine. The Spider-Man games, praised for their storytelling, graphics, and gameplay, have set a high bar, faithfully recreating the superpowers of Peter Parker and Miles Morales in an open-world New York. When Insomniac announced it would extend its Marvel Universe beyond the web-slingers, excitement for Marvel’s Wolverine soared.
The X-Men have been a cornerstone of Marvel, despite a period when Fox’s ownership of the film rights prevented their inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Marvel attempted to elevate the Inhumans as a replacement, but this didn’t resonate with fans. The last major X-Men game, X-Men: Destiny, released in 2011, was poorly received, making the return of the mutants under Insomniac’s guidance highly anticipated.
Insomniac’s Wolverine is expected to deliver more mature content than its Spider-Man titles. The reveal trailer’s tone hinted at a darker narrative, suitable for a solo Wolverine adventure. The hiring of Walt D. Williams, known for his work on Spec Ops: The Line, to write the story, suggests a departure from the T-rated Spider-Man games towards an M-rated experience.
The Spider-Man games have touched on mature themes, such as Mr. Negative’s terrorist attack in the first game, shown from non-superpowered Miles Morales’ perspective, and a head-biting scene by Venom in Spider-Man 2, handled with a cutaway to maintain a Teen rating. This precedent made the darker tone of Wolverine’s story believable.
Initial expectations for Marvel’s Wolverine included a distinct gameplay style, possibly akin to Days Gone, featuring Logan in civilian attire, dealing with criminal factions in Madripoor, and maybe utilizing his Patch alias. However, leaked footage following a cyberattack on Insomniac Games revealed gameplay similarities to Spider-Man. The footage showed Logan in his yellow Wolverine outfit, engaging in parkour across rooftops and using his claws to scale walls, reminiscent of Spider-Man’s traversal mechanics but with more weight and fewer aerial tricks.
Other leaks showed Logan fighting The Hand, Marvel’s ninja cult, in a combat style similar to the recent God of War titles. These clips also highlighted Logan’s regeneration ability, aligning with expectations for Wolverine’s combat. Despite the traversal similarities, the combat footage met anticipated standards for the character.
Drawing from Chris Claremont and Frank Miller’s 1982 Wolverine comics, the game might feature Logan’s nimbleness and parkour skills. This storyline, set in Japan, involved the Yakuza, The Hand, and a relationship with Mariko Yashida, showcasing a more agile Wolverine.
While leaks provide insights, the final game might differ as Insomniac could still make significant changes. The inclusion of parkour and possibly motorbike traversal options indicates a blend of ground-level and rooftop exploration. Insomniac’s approach appears to honor the comics while potentially offering a distinct experience from its Spider-Man titles.
