DreamWorks’ latest installment, Kung Fu Panda 4, has emerged as the second-highest grossing film in the franchise, based on IMDB Box Office Mojo/BFI statistics. As of June 2024, the film has grossed over £21,805,140 in the UK alone, marking a notable 36% increase compared to Kung Fu Panda 3 and a modest 3.6% rise over Kung Fu Panda 2.
Since its release just three months ago, Kung Fu Panda 4 is only £9,008,385 shy of matching the total gross of the original film. This financial success underscores its popularity among audiences.
Opinions on the film’s success and its ranking within the franchise varied. Fatima Butt ranked the films as follows: Kung Fu Panda 2, 1, 3, and then 4. She highlighted Kung Fu Panda 2 for its significant development of Po’s relationship with the Furious Five, although she felt the villain in the fourth installment was somewhat underwhelming compared to fan expectations.
Jemelia Essayah expressed surprise at the film’s success, noting its status as an animated children’s film versus the usual expectation for blockbuster-type films. Despite recognizing its quality, she placed Kung Fu Panda 4 at the lower end of her franchise ranking due to her preference for other entries.
Among the students interviewed, 10 out of 18 favored the original Kung Fu Panda, indicating a sentiment that the franchise has lost some of its initial charm over time. This divided opinion among fans reflects both the film’s financial success and ongoing discussions about its place within the beloved franchise.
As Kung Fu Panda continues to captivate audiences globally, its future directions and audience reception remain subjects of interest and debate.
