Hugh Jackman’s unexpected return as Wolverine in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Deadpool & Wolverine can be attributed to a pivotal phone call that reshaped the course of Marvel’s cinematic plans. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Jackman disclosed that his decision to reprise the role stemmed from a moment of clarity during a break from his Broadway stint in The Music Man. “I was sitting on a beach, not a care in the world, and for some reason, the thought came into my head: ‘What do you want to do?’ … Then, literally, I thought: Deadpool-Wolverine. I want to do that movie,” Jackman revealed.
This revelation led Jackman to reach out to his longtime co-star Ryan Reynolds, who enthusiastically supported the idea. Reynolds, known for his role as Deadpool, promptly called Marvel president Kevin Feige to propose shelving the planned third Deadpool installment in favor of pursuing the ambitious crossover film. “This is a one in a billion chance,” Reynolds insisted during the pitch.
Despite initial hesitation due to the complexities of integrating Deadpool into the MCU while maintaining the franchise’s irreverent tone, Feige eventually greenlit the project. Jackman’s return as Wolverine, despite the character’s apparent demise in 2017’s Logan, marks a significant narrative pivot for the MCU. Director Shawn Levy remarked on the transformative impact of Jackman’s decision, stating, “The story completely changed and came to us very, very quickly starting that day.”
Deadpool & Wolverine, scheduled as one of 2024’s most anticipated films, promises to bridge gaps left by Logan’s conclusion while embarking on a multiversal adventure that could reshape the MCU landscape. Alongside Reynolds and Jackman, the film features a star-studded cast including Emma Corrin, Karan Soni, Morena Baccarin, Jennifer Garner, and Stefan Kapičić. Celebrity cameos, including Taylor Swift, Halle Berry, and Taron Egerton, are also anticipated, adding to the film’s buzz and expectation among MCU enthusiasts.
