In a recent red carpet interview, Dune director Denis Villeneuve sparked controversy by criticizing the popcorn buckets associated with Wolverine and Deadpool as “horrific,” while praising his own creation for Dune as “unmatchable.”
Speaking to eTalkCTV, Villeneuve addressed the ongoing feud with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds over their respective popcorn containers. When shown a picture of the Wolverine & Deadpool bucket featuring Wolverine’s head filled with popcorn, Villeneuve clarified that he harbors no personal dislike for the design but believes it pales in comparison to the acclaim garnered by the Dune sandworm popcorn bucket, which went viral.
“I’m not against their bucket,” Villeneuve remarked. “I simply believe it faced a formidable challenge in surpassing the uniqueness of the Dune bucket.”
Indeed, the Dune sandworm bucket revolutionized the popcorn container craze in cinemas, originally setting the trend with its distinct design likened to a fantastical creation. This innovation has since inspired other film-themed buckets, such as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’s ghost trap and ECTO-1 variants, Wonka’s Willy Wonka hat bucket, and Inside Out 2’s core memory receptacle.
Villeneuve’s comments underscore a larger trend in cinema marketing as theaters and studios seek to engage audiences amidst the competitive landscape posed by streaming services.
