Alison Newman Releases New Song “Things Are About To Get Dark”

by Barbara

Alison Newman, a singer-songwriter based in Mount Gambier/Berrin, has recently unveiled her latest song, “Things Are About To Get Dark,” from her new EP titled ‘Wolf.’

Newman’s musical journey began at an early age, marked by her first performance at a school assembly when she was just five years old. Over the years, she has evolved significantly as an artist, culminating in the creation of her latest project.

All vocals for the EP were recorded locally by Newman herself, with subsequent production work carried out by her team in Spain and Argentina.

The EP comprises five emotive tracks that chronicle Newman’s personal experience with postnatal depression following the births of her two children.

Reflecting on her journey, Newman shared, “I had postnatal depression with my first child and initially didn’t understand it or seek help, as I was in denial. I kept thinking it was just a bad day, the way things were supposed to be.”

With the diagnosis came recognition, and when postnatal depression surfaced again after her second child, Newman was better prepared to address it with the support of mental health professionals, family, and friends.

“This song captures that pivotal moment when I sensed it coming again,” Newman explained.

Throughout the EP, Newman metaphorically refers to her depression as the ‘wolf,’ a symbol that permeates all five tracks. “I saw it like I’m Little Red Riding Hood, facing this big, menacing wolf that consumes me, stripping away my identity and joy,” she described.

The remaining tracks on the EP—’Free Me,’ ‘Pieces of My Pain,’ ‘Ready for Up,’ and ‘Feel into You’—continue to narrate different facets of Newman’s journey through postnatal depression, concluding with a celebratory note.

“These songs are my tribute to the people who supported me because without them, I wouldn’t have made it through,” Newman expressed gratefully.

The process of creating this EP was deeply therapeutic for Newman, who took several years to write and record the tracks, navigating the challenge of revisiting past struggles while in a better mental state.

“As an artist, creating music is my way of processing emotions and healing,” Newman shared. “It’s a form of therapy.”

Newman hopes that her music will not only resonate with listeners but also raise awareness about postnatal depression, a topic often stigmatized and overlooked.

“It’s crucial to talk about mental health issues openly,” Newman emphasized. “There’s a stigma attached, with people fearing judgment or viewing it as a weakness, but it’s a normal part of life.”

“Things Are About To Get Dark” and subsequent releases from the EP can be streamed on all major platforms, inviting listeners into Newman’s profound journey of resilience and musical expression.
