Pixar’s animated sequel ‘Inside Out 2’ has made cinematic history by surpassing $1 billion in global box office revenue, marking a milestone achievement since ‘Barbie’ in 2023. This success surpasses its predecessor, the 2015 original, which earned $858.8 million worldwide.
The film’s earnings of $469.3 million in North America and $545.5 million internationally contribute to its impressive total of $1.015 billion. Notably, ‘Inside Out 2’ has become the quickest animated movie to reach the billion-dollar mark since Disney’s 2019 hit ‘Frozen 2’.
Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, commented on the film’s success, stating, “The global triumph of this film underscores the universal appeal of compelling and entertaining cinema, especially on the big screen.”
In its opening weekend alone, ‘Inside Out 2’ grossed $150 million, surpassing ‘Frozen 2’, which earned $135 million in its debut. The sequel continues the story two years after Riley’s relocation to San Francisco, focusing on her high school experiences and the intricate workings of her emotions.
The plot delves into Riley’s “Sense of Self,” a newly formed aspect of her mind containing memories and beliefs. Led by Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler), Riley’s emotions navigate through new challenges and introduce additional characters, including Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser).
‘Inside Out 2’ arrives nearly a year after ‘Barbie’, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, dominated theaters with its portrayal of the iconic Mattel dolls, surpassing ‘Oppenheimer’ in the highly anticipated ‘Barbenheimer’ box office battle.
