Butte’s Fireworks to Feature Synchronized Music for the First Time

by Barbara

For the residents of Butte, this year’s Third of July fireworks display promises to be a unique experience. Unlike previous years, the spectacle will not only dazzle with over 1,000 fireworks but will also synchronize these bursts of color and light to music, transforming the night sky into a canvas of artistic expression.

Rachel Bolduc, a crew member from Big Sky Fireworks in Helena, describes the event as akin to painting the sky. “It’s a special type of artwork,” she says, highlighting the meticulous planning and execution that goes into creating this visual symphony.

Lead Operator Raven Ross Anderson emphasizes the precision involved in syncing fireworks to music, revealing that the scripting process began in January and required over 100 hours of meticulous planning. “It’s down to the 100th of a second,” Anderson explains, underscoring the dedication and expertise needed to craft a seamless 20-minute display.

Innovatively, spectators can enhance their experience by downloading the Pyrocast app on their smartphones and entering the code 1LFT to synchronize the fireworks with the accompanying music—a feature debuting this year.

Reflecting on his lifelong passion for fireworks, Anderson shares how his childhood fascination led him to pursue this career path. “I’ve always liked the Fourth when I was a little kid,” he recalls fondly. “You see the fireworks go off and you smile, and I want to give that to other people too, to other kids.”

Despite the intensive labor involved in setting up the display atop Big Butte, crew members like Bolduc find joy and fulfillment in the camaraderie and excitement of the annual event. “I look forward to it every year,” she exclaims. “It’s definitely my vacation, a way for me to escape working my other jobs.”

For those unable to attend in person, the fireworks extravaganza will be broadcast live on KXLF and KBZK immediately following the 10 PM News on Wednesday, July 3. Additionally, the show will be available for on-demand viewing on their website, ensuring everyone can enjoy this artistic marvel at their convenience.

This year’s Third of July fireworks display in Butte promises not just a visual spectacle but a harmonious blend of artistry and celebration, marking a milestone with its synchronized musical accompaniment.
