A new exhibition showcasing the evolution of Barbie is set to open this week, marking the iconic doll’s 65th anniversary. Titled “Barbie: The Exhibition,” the event will be hosted at the Design Museum until February 23. Featuring over 250 items from the Barbie universe, the exhibition highlights Barbie’s transformation over the decades, including her diverse appearances, design sketches, and iconic dream houses.
Among the notable displays is the first edition Barbie from 1959, characterized by blonde hair, angled eyes, and dressed in a classic black-and-white swimsuit. Subsequent models reflect Barbie’s evolution with variations in race, hair textures, and body shapes. The exhibition also introduces pioneering Barbies such as the first Black Barbie and one in a wheelchair.
A significant section of the exhibition is dedicated to Barbie’s career roles, showcasing her as a police officer, scientist, doctor, president, and voter, among others. Another focus area explores Ken, Barbie’s longtime companion introduced in 1961.
Curator Danielle Thom expressed her hopes for the exhibition, stating, “I hope that, whether you’re a Barbie enthusiast or a skeptic, visitors will leave with an appreciation for the meticulous research and rigorous design that define Barbie’s legacy.” She added, “I also hope people gain insights into how this brand has thrived and remained a dominant force in the toy market for so long.”
The exhibition’s launch coincides with Barbie’s 65th birthday celebration this year, following the immense success of last year’s “Barbie” movie starring Margot Robbie, which grossed US$1.4 billion worldwide.
