Reflecting on the loss of his bandmate, O’Donoghue admitted to ongoing grief, stating, “I’m still coming to terms with it… You never really get rid of the grief, it’s there and you just tend to try to grow around it.” The profound impact of Sheehan’s death prompted O’Donoghue to question his beliefs and the direction of his life, leading him back to regular church attendance for the first time in years.
“Questioning is there a God, is there not? What am I doing in life? Can we continue on as The Script?” O’Donoghue recounted, describing the introspective journey that ultimately brought him solace through daily Mass and prayer. He highlighted the ritual of setting aside time each morning for church as integral to his spiritual and personal recovery, paralleling it with his dedication to fitness and music.
Revisiting his early connection to the church as an altar boy, O’Donoghue underscored how returning to his roots has provided a profound sense of purpose and stability during a challenging period. “I haven’t touched a drink in six months. I feel better than I’ve ever felt,” he affirmed, crediting his faith for sustaining him through adversity.
