At 44 years old, Tang Wei, the renowned Chinese actress, has traversed the highs and lows of stardom in mainland China, culminating now in a triumphant return.
Born into an artistic family in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province in eastern China, Tang’s journey into acting began in 2000 with acceptance into the esteemed Central Academy of Drama. Her breakout onto the global stage came in 2007 with Ang Lee’s provocative spy thriller “Lust, Caution,” alongside Hong Kong’s legendary Tony Leung Chiu-wai.
Despite winning accolades such as the Best New Performer at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, the film and Tang herself faced a ban in mainland China due to its intimate scenes. Undeterred, Tang pursued drama studies at the University of Reading in Britain during her hiatus, occasionally performing street theater for additional income.
Her return to prominence came in 2008 with her move to Hong Kong under the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme, leading to a notable comeback in 2010 with “Late Autumn.” Her portrayal as a parolee in Seattle earned her the prestigious Best Actress award at South Korea’s Baeksang Arts Awards, a historic achievement as the first foreign recipient.
Beyond her cinematic success, Tang found personal happiness, marrying director Kim Tae-yong in 2014 and welcoming their daughter, Summer, in 2016. Concurrently, her ban in mainland China was lifted, allowing her to star in popular films like “Finding Mr. Right” and its sequel.
In 2022, Tang Wei captivated audiences once again as the lead in Park Chan-wook’s acclaimed “Decision to Leave,” a romance murder mystery. Her portrayal earned her a second Baeksang Best Actress award and recognition at the Blue Dragon Film Awards.
