Joan Benedict Steiger, known for her roles in ‘General Hospital’ and beyond, passed away on June 24 in Los Angeles at the age of 96.
Joan Benedict Steiger, a veteran actress recognized for her contributions to television and film, died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center due to complications from a stroke, as confirmed by a family spokesperson.
Born in Brooklyn, Benedict initially pursued dance before transitioning to acting. Her career spanned decades, with notable appearances in popular TV shows such as Candid Camera, The Steve Allen Show, The Incredible Hulk, and Fantasy Island. She also appeared in films like The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington and Perfect Victims.
Among her memorable roles, Benedict recurred on General Hospital as Edith Fairchild and made her final onscreen appearance in the 2017 film Opus of an Angel.
Throughout her life, Benedict was married to John Myhers for 30 years until his death in 1992. She later married actor Rod Steiger in 2000, following a previous acquaintance from their teenage years. After Steiger’s passing in 2002, Benedict entered a relationship with Jeremy Slate until his death in 2006.
Reflecting on her personal life, Benedict shared in a 2016 interview with Women Fitness, “Both of my husbands, and my lifetime partner, Jeremy, were wonderful men who respected me as an actress. They all died from different forms of cancer, so my memories are sometimes bittersweet, but with no regrets.”
Joan Benedict Steiger is survived by her daughter Claudia, and granddaughters Hanna and Ashley.
