New Star Wars Film Taps Marvel’s Jonathan Tropper as Writer

by Barbara

The Marvel and Star Wars franchises, both colossal sci-fi realms under the Disney banner, have become pillars of modern blockbuster entertainment. Their influence spans interconnected narratives across films and Disney+ series, with a significant overlap in their fanbases. Despite their similarities, the two universes are fundamentally different, rooted in distinct storytelling traditions and thematic approaches. Now, a new development suggests that Star Wars might be venturing into Marvel territory, a decision that could prove contentious.

Jonathan Tropper, known for his collaboration with director Shawn Levy on projects such as The Adam Project and Kodachrome, is set to write Levy’s upcoming Star Wars film. While Tropper’s work, particularly The Adam Project, reflects a deep reverence for classic science fiction, this approach may not seamlessly translate to the Star Wars universe.

Tropper’s involvement might initially appear promising given the nostalgic underpinnings of The Adam Project, which echoed Star Wars through subtle references. However, this nostalgia could be a double-edged sword. Levy’s films often rely on self-referential humor and meta-commentary, a hallmark of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Deadpool franchise. Such comedic elements are generally absent from the core Star Wars narratives, where humor is relegated to spinoffs like the Lego adaptations rather than the main storyline.

While Tropper’s extensive background, which includes work on Banshee and Warrior, showcases his ability to craft diverse stories, it remains to be seen if he can diverge from Levy’s nostalgic style to meet the unique demands of the Star Wars saga. Both franchises share the blockbuster spotlight but diverge significantly in their storytelling methods and thematic exploration.

As the Star Wars franchise continues to expand, the challenge for creators working across both Marvel and Star Wars universes will be to respect these differences. Tropper’s role as writer for this new film will be closely watched as fans and critics alike debate whether this crossover of talent will ultimately serve the distinct legacies of these two beloved franchises.
