Neil Patrick Harris, Sikking’s co-star in “Doogie Howser, M.D.”, expressed heartfelt condolences and admiration for the late actor, describing him as “one of the kindest, wisest, funniest and most generous people I’ve ever known.” Harris, who played Sikking’s on-screen son in the medical drama, emphasized Sikking’s professionalism and the invaluable lessons he imparted.
Sikking’s career spanned nearly six decades and included memorable appearances in a wide array of television series such as “Starsky and Hutch,” “MASH,” and “Columbo,” as well as significant roles in “General Hospital” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” However, it was his roles as Lt. Howard Hunter in “Hill Street Blues” and Dr. David Howser in “Doogie Howser, M.D.” that solidified his place in television history.
Born on March 5, 1934, in Los Angeles, Sikking began his acting journey after graduating from UCLA in 1959. His portrayal of Lt. Howard Hunter, a rigid but humorous character in “Hill Street Blues,” earned him critical acclaim and a Primetime Emmy nomination in 1984. He continued to thrive in both television and film, appearing in notable movies like “Ordinary People” and “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.”
After the conclusion of “Doogie Howser, M.D.” in 1993, Sikking remained active in the entertainment industry, taking on supporting roles in various series and television movies. His dedication to his craft and versatility as an actor endeared him to audiences and colleagues alike.
