Mattel has unveiled a special edition Barbie doll in honor of WNBA icon Sue Bird, celebrating her monumental impact on women’s basketball. Announced on Tuesday, the collectible doll pays tribute to Bird, renowned for her groundbreaking career and significant contributions to the sport.
The doll, part of Mattel’s Role Model series, features Bird in a No. 10 jersey, a nod to her long-standing number with the Seattle Storm. This release is part of Mattel’s broader celebration of Barbie’s 65th anniversary and its summer of sports initiative.
Bird, who retired in 2022 after an illustrious 21-season career exclusively with the Storm, led the team to four championships. Additionally, she was a key player on five U.S. national teams, securing gold medals at the 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2021 Olympics. Bird is now a part-owner of the Seattle Storm.
The University of Connecticut, where Bird secured two national championships during her college career, shared a photo of the retired star joyfully holding her Barbie doll. This tribute highlights Bird’s enduring legacy and her role in advancing the women’s game.
