Emma Roberts and Cody John are officially engaged, as the actress shared the joyous news with her fans on Instagram Tuesday. Roberts, known for her roles in Scream Queens and American Horror Story, posted a candid photo of herself and John embracing, prominently displaying her sparkling engagement ring.
“Putting this here before my mom tells everyone,” Roberts quipped in the caption, referring to her mother, Kelly Cunningham, who previously shared an image of Roberts’ 3-year-old son on social media.
Cunningham, who reshared the engagement announcement on her Instagram Story, expressed her excitement with a simple yet heartfelt “Congratulations.”
The announcement sparked a flurry of congratulatory messages from fans and friends. Lea Michele, Roberts’ co-star from Scream Queens, expressed her enthusiasm with, “Already planning the bachelorette!!!! So happy for you babe!!!” Meanwhile, singer Aly Michalka added, “Hahahaha oh man do I relate to this. Congrats Em!!!”
This engagement marks the first marriage for both Roberts, 33, and John, 34. Roberts shares a son named Rhodes with her ex-partner Garrett Hedlund.
Earlier this year, Roberts addressed the public sharing of her son’s photo by her mother, noting in an Instagram Story that, “When your mom posts your [son’s] face without asking but you love them both so whatever.”
Roberts and John, an actor known for roles in Wu-Tang: An American Saga and In the Dark, have been linked romantically since 2022. John first confirmed their relationship with a photo of the couple sharing a kiss, captioned “sweet sweet.”
While Roberts has been open about her engagement, she generally keeps her personal life private. In a 2019 , she expressed her desire to keep her relationships out of the public eye, stating, “I never want to talk about relationships I’m in or that are ending or have ended. It’s hard enough to be with someone by yourself, let alone with an audience.”
Roberts’ father, Eric Roberts, who is also the brother of Julia Roberts, recently mentioned the family’s preference for privacy during a podcast appearance. He acknowledged, “I love my sister, but I can’t talk about her. She doesn’t wanna talk about it,” and added that his daughter has similarly requested privacy. “My daughter told me also not to talk about her, but I stumble and do. I’m not supposed to talk about either of them. But I do.”
