Country music star Cody Johnson took a powerful stand during his concert on Saturday night, delivering a passionate speech in response to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The incident occurred approximately 30 minutes before Johnson was set to perform at the Windy City Smokeout Country Music and BBQ Festival in Chicago.
“Here’s what I’ve got to say about it, and I hope you’ll hear me out. It’s my microphone, and I can say what I want to, right?” the 37-year-old singer told the enthusiastic crowd.
Johnson condemned the violence, stating, “The fact that any American citizen would think that what they did today would solve a problem in this country is absolutely disgusting. If you want to make a change, go vote on Election Day for the candidate of your choice. An American soldier died for your right to disagree.”
He expressed frustration with the ongoing division in the country, saying, “I’m tired of the hatred. I’m tired of the division. There are people in this crowd who support Trump and those who support Biden. That is your God-given American right, a right bought with sacrifice.”
Johnson passionately declared, “I don’t care who you vote for or how you feel about the news. The only things that matter to me tonight are red, white, and blue.”
His remarks resonated with the audience, prompting cheers and chants of “USA! USA! USA!” The moment culminated in Johnson leading the crowd in a rendition of “God Bless America.”
Cody Johnson is widely recognized for his hit song “’Til You Can’t,” which earned him the Male Video of the Year award at the 2022 CMT Music Awards. He also received the title of Best New Country Artist at the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
