Calgary Folk Music Festival: A Celebration of Musical Diversity

by Barbara

As the Calgary Folk Music Festival kicks off its 45th annual celebration, attendees are in for a treat as they stroll through Prince’s Island Park over the next few days. The festival promises a captivating blend of soothing melodies and vibrant rhythms from some of the world’s most acclaimed musical talents. Organizers are confident that this year’s festival will embody the spirit that has made it a cherished event for nearly half a century.

A Legacy of Passion and Community

Sara Leishman, the Executive Director of the Calgary Folk Music Festival, emphasizes that the event’s enduring appeal lies in its dedication to music and community. “We have an incredible pool of individuals who are deeply passionate about bringing music to Calgary,” Leishman explained. “We’re now seeing three generations of volunteers working together. Some of the original founders’ children have met, married, and now their grandchildren are starting to get involved.”

The festival aims to provide a familiar yet refreshed experience for longtime attendees while introducing new visitors to its unique charm. Leishman highlighted that the event remains family-friendly, with activities such as kids’ programming and ample space for picnicking. This year, festival-goers will also benefit from site-wide licensing, allowing them to enjoy beer and wine outside of designated areas, alongside a dedicated cannabis consumption zone in compliance with AGLC regulations.

Diverse Lineup Featuring Global and Local Talent

Artistic Director Kerry Clarke revealed that this year’s lineup reflects a broad spectrum of international and local talent. With over 70 artist groups from Africa, Europe, the United States, and Calgary, the festival showcases a rich variety of musical styles. “We have artists from our own backyard as well as from around the globe. Locally, we have about 12 to 15 different artists, some of whom will be participating in exciting collaborative sessions with international acts,” Clarke noted.

The festival’s headliners include a mix of established icons and emerging stars. Scottish singer-songwriter Ben Howard will take the main stage on July 25, while The Mariacchi Ghost, known for their prog rock and harmonies, will headline the National Stage. On July 26, the Cowboy Junkies, celebrating their 40th anniversary, will perform on the main stage, with Zar Electrik headlining the National Stage. The Roots will energize the main stage on July 27, and Booker T Presents: A Stax Revue will close out the festival on July 28.

Local Artists Shine

Calgary-based artist Meg Thompson, performing under the name Megs Benedict with the art rock collective L’Omelette, expressed her excitement about performing at the festival. “Playing at a festival allows us to reach a broader audience than usual, including families and people of all ages and backgrounds. It’s a significant opportunity and an honor to be part of Calgary’s music scene,” Thompson shared.

Festival Traditions and Community Spirit

The festival opens on Thursday evening with the traditional “tarp hop,” where attendees eagerly secure their spots in front of the main stage. Clarke described this annual ritual and other traditions, such as the lantern parade, as integral to the festival experience. “The lantern parade at the end of the night is a beautiful tradition that involves kids and families, creating a sense of community and celebration.”

With an expected daily attendance of around 8,500 people, Leishman confirmed that tickets are still available. “We’ve sold a good number of tickets in advance, but we always have attendees who decide to come on the day of the festival. The weather forecast is looking promising, which should make for an even more enjoyable experience,” she said.

The Calgary Folk Music Festival continues to be a vibrant celebration of music and community, drawing attendees from near and far to Prince’s Island Park for an unforgettable experience.
