This year’s show featured tributes to Barbie, Beetlejuice, Magic 8 Ball, Monster High, Popples, and more. With a focus on craftsmanship and imaginative design, the event also celebrated significant anniversaries, including 65 years of Barbie, 35 years of Polly Pocket, and nearly 80 years of Mattel.
Wes Jenkins Takes Top Honors with Barbie-Inspired Creation
Wes Jenkins emerged as the winner of this year’s Her Universe Fashion Show, earning accolades for a design that repurposed over 600 pieces of second-hand Barbie clothes. Jenkins’ creation, a tribute to Barbie’s enduring legacy, was a testament to both creativity and dedication.
Jenkins revealed that the inspiration for the design stemmed from a childhood fascination with her mother’s collection of Barbie clothes. “I was just so fascinated by all these tiny little clothes,” Jenkins shared. “Like, you’re used to being the smallest thing in the room. And these were even smaller.”
The winning design featured a light pink bodice and sleeves, with an ombre skirt transitioning from light to dark pink. Each piece of Barbie clothing was meticulously selected and arranged to form a cohesive and visually striking dress. Jenkins also designed a matching pink blazer, a last-minute addition that complemented the main outfit.
Jenkins’ achievement at the Her Universe Fashion Show highlights her exceptional talent and innovative approach to fashion. The Barbie-inspired ensemble not only celebrates the iconic doll but also showcases Jenkins’ ability to blend nostalgia with contemporary design.
