Robert Downey Jr. Returns to Marvel as Doctor Doom

San Diego Comic-Con 2024 witnessed a major buzz from Marvel Studios, with the biggest surprise being Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, Downey is stepping into a new role, leaving behind his iconic Iron Man suit to portray the notorious villain Victor Von Doom.

During the Saturday night panel, Marvel Studios dropped a bombshell announcement: Downey will star as Doctor Doom in the upcoming “Avengers” films, specifically “Avengers: Doomsday” (scheduled for release in May 2026) and “Avengers: Secret Wars” (set for May 2027). This revelation came after Marvel had already made waves with the energetic screening of “Deadpool & Wolverine” at the convention.

In addition to the Doctor Doom reveal, fans were treated to exclusive previews of three highly anticipated movies set for release in 2025. These include “Captain America: Brave New World” (February 14), featuring Anthony Mackie; the ensemble film “Thunderbolts” (May 5), with returning MCU favorites Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, and David Harbour; and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (July 25), starring Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby.

Doctor Doom Joins the MCU

Robert Downey Jr.’s dramatic entrance as Doctor Doom was a highlight of the panel. Downey, known for his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man, surprised fans by revealing his new role with a dramatic unmasking. “New mask, same task. What’d I tell you? I like playing complicated characters,” Downey said. The announcement of Downey’s role as Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” promises to bring a fresh dynamic to the MCU.

The Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously directed “Avengers: Endgame,” will helm both upcoming “Avengers” movies. Joe Russo hailed the new storyline as “the biggest story Marvel Comics ever told,” indicating high expectations for these films.

The Fantastic Four Take Center Stage

The panel also featured a look at the highly anticipated “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which begins filming in the UK this week. Director Matt Shakman was present to discuss the film’s setting in a retrofuturistic New York during the 1920s. The film will blend comic book elements with a touch of real-world science. Shakman introduced a reel showcasing Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards and the team embarking on a space mission, with a glimpse of the colossal Galactus.

Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn were all on stage to discuss their roles. Pascal, who plays Reed Richards, expressed excitement about joining the Marvel universe and his long-standing connection with Shakman. Kirby, as Sue Storm, shared her enthusiasm for the source material and the joy it brings.

Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World

David Harbour made a memorable entrance as Red Guardian for the “Thunderbolts” segment, complete with a Russian accent. The cast, including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, discussed their characters and the film’s plot. Pugh highlighted the team’s dynamic and the film’s blend of antiheroes and villains.

In “Captain America: Brave New World,” Harrison Ford made an energetic appearance, embracing his new role as President “Thunderbolt” Ross. The film’s new trailer introduced the concept of adamantium, linking the MCU to the X-Men universe. Ford, thrilled to join the Marvel franchise, expressed his excitement about being part of the MCU legacy.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and stars from various upcoming projects also made appearances. Giancarlo Esposito was introduced as Sidewinder in “Captain America: Brave New World,” and Tim Blake Nelson returns as the Leader, marking his first MCU appearance since “The Incredible Hulk.”

The panel concluded with a lively presentation of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Reynolds emphasized the film’s commitment to maintaining a balance of restraint and excitement.

Comic-Con 2024 was a memorable event for Marvel fans, packed with announcements, exclusive footage, and a glimpse into the future of the MCU.
