Claire Denis Offers Insight on Robert Pattinson’s Batman

by Barbara

Renowned French filmmaker Claire Denis shared her thoughts on Matt Reeves’ The Batman, in which Robert Pattinson stars.

Denis, who has collaborated closely with Pattinson and maintains a close friendship with him, offered a nuanced view of the film. “I watched The Batman because Robert Pattinson is a friend,” she said. “Of course, it’s a lot, a lot, a lot of post-production. A crew of 300. But the work inside, the way Robert thinks about Batman—I like the way he constructed his Batman. It’s the rest of it—the effects, the crowds, the post-production, it’s like two films in one. There’s the Batman story, which is very intimate and delicate, and then the rest. I would do a Batman [movie] if I could do it without the rest.”

Denis’ comments, while reflective, lean towards polite approval rather than outright praise. Although the idea of Denis directing a Batman film is intriguing, her interest seems unlikely to translate into a future project, given the scale and style of the superhero genre.

Denis, one of France’s most esteemed and globally recognized female filmmakers, has yet to receive a César nomination for directing despite her acclaimed works such as 35 Shots of Rum, Beau Travail, The Intruder, and White Material.

Currently, Denis is preparing for her next film, The Fence, though details about its production schedule remain unclear. At 78 years old, Denis shows no signs of slowing down, famously stating, “I think the best way to retire is to die.”
