Marvel Studios’ latest film, Deadpool & Wolverine, has captivated audiences with its array of major returns and cameos. However, one notable absence has left many fans disappointed: Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Ghost Rider.
Before the film’s release, rumors swirled that Cage might reprise his role as Johnny Blaze, also known as Ghost Rider, in the movie. These speculations were fueled by fans’ hope for a definitive multiverse cameo. However, upon the film’s release, Cage’s Ghost Rider was nowhere to be found, leading to a wave of discontent on social media.
Fans expressed their dissatisfaction on platforms like X, where many felt that Cage’s inclusion would have elevated Deadpool & Wolverine to “perfection.” One user commented, “[Deadpool & Wolverine] would’ve been the perfect movie if they slipped in a Nick Cage Ghost Rider reference or even a cameo.” Another post noted, “Not gonna lie, I’m surprised Ryan Reynolds didn’t get Nicolas Cage to cameo as Ghost Rider in the film. I feel like Nick would have 100% been down to do it.”
The absence of Cage’s Ghost Rider raises questions about whether his appearance was ever considered. Cage’s recent experiences with multiverse cameos have been less than ideal. His last major cameo, in The Flash, was met with disappointment due to a poorly received CGI-assisted appearance, which diverged from what was initially scripted and filmed.
Cage first took on the role of Johnny Blaze in 2007’s Ghost Rider, directed by Mark Steven Johnson, and returned for the 2012 sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. In 2023, Cage indicated he would be open to revisiting the role, which may have further fueled speculation about his potential appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. He remarked to Uproxx that he was interested in roles with “some pop to it,” similar to Face/Off 2 or Ghost Rider.
Despite the disappointment among fans, Cage is set to appear in another Marvel-based project. He will star as Spider-Man Noir in Amazon’s upcoming series Spider-Noir, following his voice role in the Spider-Verse films. Additionally, Cage has been gaining acclaim for his recent performance in the horror film Longlegs, which has been a box office success.
As fans continue to debate the missed opportunity of Cage’s Ghost Rider cameo, the film industry will watch closely to see how future Marvel projects handle fan expectations and multiverse potential.
