Barbie enthusiasts in Northland will soon have the opportunity to explore the iconic doll’s storied history at the “Barbie: A Cultural Icon” exhibit, opening at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC) on August 6.
The exhibit, a collaboration between Illusion Projects and Mattel, Inc., follows successful runs in Las Vegas and Phoenix before arriving in Duluth. Visitors will have the chance to engage with Barbie’s evolution through various interactive displays, including a life-size Barbie Dream House and Barbie Dream Car.
Notably, the display will feature the original Barbie doll along with her first 22 outfits, offering a nostalgic look back at the doll’s origins. The exhibit is enriched by private collections and donations, creating a unique and valuable showcase.
Trevor Bluth, Chief Operating Officer of Illusion Projects, emphasized the personal connection many have with Barbie. “The beautiful thing about Barbie is everyone has their own story from their childhood or whatever they first remember as Barbie, even if you aren’t playing with them,” Bluth said. “You have an idea of Barbie, and the nice thing about this is you can see from that era, from your story.”
The exhibit will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from August 4 to September 2. Starting September 6, it will be open Fridays through Sundays until September 22.
