Ryan Reynolds Reflects on Future of Deadpool & Wolverine

by Barbara

The R-rated blockbuster featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman has set a new benchmark for Marvel, echoing the success of the 2021 superhero hit. Despite the film’s impressive performance, Reynolds has expressed uncertainty about his future as Deadpool.

The 47-year-old actor admitted he is unsure if he will reprise his role as the ‘Merc with a Mouth.’ The film, directed by Shawn Levy, was crafted as a “complete experience,” intentionally avoiding any setup for potential future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) installments.

Reynolds explained, “Shawn made it pretty clear, and I think in the most loving way, because it’s a great problem to have when a studio asks, ‘What’s next?’ or, ‘How can we make something else?’ But this movie was made as a complete experience. It wasn’t meant to be a commercial for another film.”

He continued, “I derive a great deal of joy from making a movie like that. But honestly, at this moment, I have no idea if I’ll ever wear the Deadpool suit again. I hope I do, but I don’t know. For now, it’s time to step back and see what happens next.”

Reynolds also praised the creative freedom he was granted by Marvel and Disney. He noted that neither studio pressured him to include elements that would set up future MCU projects. “A lot of people have asked me if there was pressure to connect this movie to the next Avengers installment. To their credit, neither Disney nor Marvel asked us to include anything beyond one satisfying self-contained story. We achieved that with their support. As for what comes next, only time will tell.”
