Abigail Lapell, a Canadian folk singer-songwriter and instrumentalist based in Toronto, showcased her sixth album, Anniversary, at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival (EFMF) this weekend. Lapell, who has been touring across Canada and the northeastern U.S. since the album’s release, expressed excitement about performing new songs live. She noted that while many tracks are mellow, “Rattlesnake” has engaged audiences with its intricate clapping parts.
Anniversary marks a thematic shift for Lapell, focusing entirely on love, a departure from her previous work. The album explores various facets of love, including loss, grief, and romantic affection. Lapell hopes listeners will leave with at least one memorable song from the album, which she crafted with her own enjoyment in mind.
The recording process for Anniversary was notably unique, as Lapell recorded the album in a 200-year-old church in Niagara on Lake Ontario. Despite the challenges of recording in such an unconventional space and the loss of some control over the production process, Lapell found the experience inspiring. She appreciated the natural reverb and vibrant acoustics of the old church.
Co-producer Tony Dekker, of the band Great Lake Swimmers, played a key role in the project. Dekker, who has experience recording in non-traditional venues, and Lapell, who had previously discussed a collaboration, finally teamed up when their schedules aligned. Lapell praised Dekker for his valuable input and balance in the production process, expressing gratitude for the successful outcome of the project.
