This new entry is the ninth film in the “Alien” series, following the original 1979 release. It has recorded the second-best domestic opening for the franchise, trailing only behind “Prometheus,” which premiered in 2012. “Romulus” outperformed both “Alien vs. Predator” (2004) and “Alien: Covenant” (2017) in domestic earnings.

“Alien: Romulus” dethroned “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which had held the top spot for the past four weeks. “Deadpool & Wolverine” earned $29 million this weekend, placing it second, while “It Ends With Us” came in third with $24 million. The fourth spot was claimed by “Twisters,” which grossed $9.8 million, and a re-release of the animated cult classic “Coraline” rounded out the top five with $8.9 million.

Big Number

The “Alien” franchise has now grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, not adjusted for inflation.
