Nearly three decades after their collaboration in the 1996 blockbuster Twister, actors Sean Whalen and Alan Ruck have teamed up once more for a new film, Crust, a horror comedy set to make its theatrical debut.
Crust is described by Whalen as a unique blend of the 1960 classic The Little Shop of Horrors and the psychological thriller Willard. The film marks Whalen’s directorial debut, a notable shift from his previous roles in cult classics such as Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs, which is currently being remade by Jordan Peele. Co-written by Whalen and Jim Wald, Crust is also the first theatrical release under the recently revived Anchor Bay Entertainment.
The plot of Crust follows Vegas Winters, played by Whalen, a disillusioned former child actor who has retreated to managing a dilapidated laundromat. His sorrowful tears bring to life a pile of socks that transforms into a monstrous yet protective creature named Crust. The film, shot entirely in black and white with selective color elements for dramatic effect, showcases a blend of horror and dark humor.
Whalen and Ruck first worked together on Twister, where Whalen portrayed Allan Sanders and Ruck played storm chaser Robert “Rabbit” Nurick. Reflecting on their past collaboration, Whalen shared, “I met Alan when I got into a beat-up truck on a dirt road while filming Twister in 1996. I was an excited actor eager to ‘act’ in a big movie and had the privilege of learning from his brilliant and easygoing style. We became friends, and he’s one of the kindest people I’ve met. Alan agreed to join Crust to support my directorial debut, and I’m thrilled to have him in this project. Our reunion on screen after 27 years is truly special.”
In Crust, Ruck plays Randy Roberts, a former co-star now leading the reboot of their 1990s sitcom. The cast also features Daniel Roebuck, known for his roles in Final Destination and Rob Zombie’s The Munsters, and Felissa Rose, celebrated for her role in the horror classic Sleepaway Camp. The film is produced by Whalen, Rose, Logan, and Kearney.
Crust is set to hit theaters on September 13, 2024.
