Lionsgate has withdrawn the latest trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s highly anticipated film, Megalopolis, following allegations that it included several fabricated quotes from renowned film critics.
The trailer featured attributed quotes from notable critics such as Pauline Kael of The New Yorker and Andrew Sarris of the Village Voice. Kael’s supposed quote described a previous Coppola film as “diminished by its artsiness,” while Sarris allegedly criticized it as “sloppy self-indulgent.” These quotes were purportedly taken from their reviews of Coppola’s acclaimed classic, The Godfather. Additional fabricated quotes were attributed to reviews of Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
However, it has been revealed that these quotes do not appear in the critics’ actual reviews. The intention behind including these quotes was to highlight the enduring impact of Coppola’s films despite initial critical reactions, and to suggest that Megalopolis would join the ranks of his legendary works.
In response to the controversy, a Lionsgate representative issued a statement: “Lionsgate is immediately recalling our trailer for Megalopolis. We offer our sincere apologies to the critics involved, as well as to Francis Ford Coppola and American Zoetrope for this inexcusable error in our vetting process. We screwed up. We are sorry.”
