Daron Beck, the influential frontman of the Texas-based metal band Pinkish Black, has died at the age of 48. The news was announced by the band’s longtime label, Relapse Records, on Friday, August 23. In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, Relapse Records described Beck as “a kind, tremendously funny, and gentle soul” who produced some of the most creative and compelling music released by the label. The statement also expressed condolences to Beck’s partner, Lisa, his mother, Debbie, his bandmate Jon Teague, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Beck’s death was attributed to natural causes following medical complications, according to a representative from Relapse Records, as confirmed by Pitchfork.
Beck, who founded Pinkish Black with drummer Jon Teague in 2011, was previously a member of the doom-jazz project Great Tyrant. The Great Tyrant disbanded in 2010 following the suicide of bassist Tommy Atkins.
Pinkish Black made its debut with a self-titled album in 2012, showcasing Beck’s lead vocals and keyboard skills alongside Teague’s percussion work. The band’s subsequent releases included Razed to the Ground (2013), Bottom of the Morning (2015), Concept Unification (2019), and a 2020 collaborative effort with Yells at Eels titled Vanishing Light in the Tunnel of Dreams.
In addition to his work with Pinkish Black, Beck participated in Zombi & Friends, a group known for covering soft rock hits from the 1970s and 1980s. In 2018, Beck faced health challenges, including two heart attacks, which led to a GoFundMe campaign launched in his support.
Beck’s contributions to music and his impact on those who knew him will be remembered and celebrated.
