At the 2024 Berlinale Film Festival, Canadian director Kazik Radwanski’s latest film, Matt and Mara, garnered significant attention. The film marks Radwanski’s reunion with Deragh Campbell, known for her role in Anne at 13,000 ft, and features Matt Johnson, director of BlackBerry. Cinema Guild has acquired the film and plans to release it starting September 13 at IFC Center in New York.
The film’s synopsis reveals: “Mara (Deragh Campbell), a young creative writing professor, encounters Matt (Matt Johnson), a charismatic author from her past, on her university campus. As they reconnect over shared interests, Mara faces tensions in her strained marriage with an experimental musician. When her husband cancels their trip to a conference, Matt joins her on the road, intensifying the dynamics of their evolving relationship.”
Savina Petkova’s Berlinale review praises Radwanski’s direction, noting how he explores the complexities of intimacy through the characters. Petkova highlights the palpable chemistry between Campbell and Johnson and describes the film as a study of personal boundaries rather than a conventional romantic narrative.
