Seven officials from Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Jail have been suspended following an investigation into allegations of special treatment given to Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwar confirmed that the suspension came after a preliminary inquiry revealed security lapses. The controversy erupted when a photograph and video surfaced showing Darshan, who is in judicial custody related to the Renukaswamy murder case, appearing to receive preferential treatment.
The image, which went viral, depicted Darshan in a relaxed pose with a cigarette and coffee cup, surrounded by individuals including his manager, Nagaraj, and other inmates. A video also allegedly showed Darshan on a video call. Public outrage followed, with critics accusing the jail of providing luxurious conditions for the actor.
Darshan, along with 16 others including his friend Pavithra Gowda, faces charges related to the murder of fan Renukaswamy. The case has attracted significant media attention due to Darshan’s celebrity status. It suggest that Renukaswamy’s murder was provoked by obscene messages he allegedly sent to Gowda, leading to his brutal death on June 9.
Renukaswamy’s father, Kashinath S. Shivanagowdru, has demanded a thorough investigation, suggesting that a CBI probe might be necessary. He expressed shock over the photograph, stating that Darshan’s conditions appeared more like a resort than a prison.
The ongoing investigation revealed that Raghavendra, a member of Darshan’s fan club, lured Renukaswamy to his death under the guise of meeting the actor. The post-mortem confirmed that Renukaswamy died from multiple blunt force injuries.
