Royal Mail has announced the release of eight special stamps celebrating the 50th anniversary of the iconic British TV comedy series, “Porridge.” The stamps feature memorable quotes and scenes from the show, showcasing prominent cast members such as Richard Beckinsale as Lennie Godber, Ronnie Barker as Norman Stanley Fletcher, and Fulton Mackay as Mr. Mackay.
“Porridge,” which aired from 1974 to 1977, follows the experiences of Norman and Lennie in prison, surrounded by petty criminals and officers like Mr. Mackay and Mr. Barrowclough, played by Brian Wilde. The series, created by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, was renowned for its sharp writing and has since spawned a big-screen adaptation and a sequel series, “Going Straight.”
Clement reminisced about the show’s title, recalling how both he and La Frenais had independently thought of “Porridge” as the perfect name, which Barker later agreed upon. La Frenais noted their visits to various prisons for research, which initially made them doubt the comedic potential of the series.
David Gold, Royal Mail’s director of external affairs and policy, praised the show’s lasting appeal, attributing its success to the quality of writing and acting. Barker, who passed away in 2005, was also known for “The Two Ronnies” and “Open All Hours,” while Beckinsale, who died in 1979, was known for “The Rising Damp.”
The commemorative stamps, along with a range of collectible items, are available for pre-order starting August 29 on the Royal Mail website and by phone. They will be available for general sale from September 3, with a presentation pack of all eight stamps priced at £14.30.
