New Documentary on Casa Bonita Highlights South Park

by Barbara

South Park enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that Casa Bonita, a Denver restaurant featured in a memorable 2003 episode of the show, is making a return in a new documentary from the show’s creators. Titled ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!, the film will debut in Denver on September 6, followed by a theatrical release in New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Boston, and other select cities starting September 13. It will later be available for streaming on Paramount+ this fall.

Directed by Arthur Bradford, the documentary follows South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker as they undertake the restoration of Casa Bonita, often described as the “Disneyland of Mexican restaurants.” The film, which won the audience award at the Tribeca Festival, delves into Stone and Parker’s long-standing fascination with the restaurant and their decision to purchase and renovate it. The trailer showcases the restaurant’s deteriorated state and the restoration process.

This venture comes from the same team behind 6 Days to Air: The Making of South Park, which explored the rapid production of South Park episodes. The Casa Bonita episode from season seven remains a standout, featuring a humorous plot where Cartman schemes to attend a birthday party at the restaurant.

South Park itself continues to thrive, with its 26th season concluding in March 2023 and a 27th season in the works. Additionally, Stone and Parker are preparing a live-action comedy film with Kendrick Lamar, set for release on July 4, 2025.
