Blue Harbor Entertainment has released the official trailer for “The Herricanes,” a compelling documentary that chronicles the untold story of the Houston Herricanes, pioneers in women’s full-contact football. Premiering at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, the film won the Audience Award in the Doc Spotlight section.
The Houston Herricanes were integral to the first women’s full-tackle football league in the 1970s. Despite facing numerous challenges, the team was driven solely by their passion for the sport. Their dedication not only made history but also ignited a movement that continues to resonate today.
Directed by Olivia Kuan, known for her previous thriller “Catfish Killer,” “The Herricanes” marks Kuan’s debut as a documentary filmmaker. Produced by James Lee Hernandez, Brian Lazarte, Lisa France, James Short, Justin Baldoni, and Andrew Calof, the film explores the ongoing struggles of women in football. Although Title IX has greatly expanded opportunities for women in sports since 1972, football remains a significant challenge for female athletes.
Despite receiving minimal public support during their four-year existence, the Herricanes persevered, showcasing their resilience and commitment. The documentary highlights the contrast between their historical struggle and the current state of women’s football, which continues to face many of the same obstacles.
“The Herricanes,” formerly known as “Brick House,” will be released in select U.S. theaters starting this October.
