Sir Ian McKellen, renowned for his portrayal of Gandalf in J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic film adaptations, has hinted at a potential return to the role. McKellen revealed that he has been approached about appearing in new Lord of the Rings films. “Enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings shows no sign of abating,” McKellen said. “I’ve been told there are going to be more films with Gandalf involved, and they hope that I’ll be playing him.”
At 85, McKellen, who is currently recovering from an on-stage accident, indicated uncertainty about the timeline and script for the new films, urging for prompt action on the project. He affirmed his intention to continue acting as long as he remains physically and mentally capable.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced in May that Andy Serkis will direct and star in two new Lord of the Rings films, tentatively titled Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, with the first installment set for release in 2026. Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, co-writers of the original trilogy, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, will pen the screenplay. Peter Jackson will produce the films.
McKellen, who recently suffered a broken wrist from a stage fall while performing as John Falstaff, has taken the rest of 2024 off to recover. He may return to acting in 2025, aligning with the expected start of production for the new Lord of the Rings films.
