“The Tower” Returns for Third Series

by Barbara

The acclaimed police procedural drama The Tower makes its much-anticipated return to television tonight with the debut of its third series. The show will air its premiere episode at 9 PM on ITV and ITVX.

Gemma Whelan, known for her roles in Game of Thrones, Upstart Crow, and Gentleman Jack, reprises her role as Detective Sergeant Sarah Collins. Collins, a determined and no-nonsense officer, faces some of London’s most challenging cases. The series is penned by the distinguished screenwriter Patrick Harbinson and is adapted from Kate London’s Metropolitan trilogy.

The inaugural season of The Tower followed DS Collins as she investigated the mysterious deaths of a veteran police officer and a young Libyan girl, both of whom fell from a London tower block. The second season centered on a long-cold case involving a missing schoolgirl.

The upcoming season is adapted from London’s book Gallowstree Lane and promises a gripping storyline involving drugs and gang-related crime. Harbinson has teased that this series will feature major roles for Jimmy and Emmett’s characters, as well as provide a powerful conclusion to the Portland Tower storyline. Harbinson expressed confidence that this season will be the strongest yet.

Whelan shared that the third series delves into themes of knife crime and gang loyalty, both within and outside the police force. “Season three explores the survival instincts of gang members and juxtaposes that with the police’s own moral dilemmas,” Whelan explained. “It’s a season where Sarah’s usual adherence to the law is challenged like never before.”

The third series of The Tower will premiere on Monday, September 2, at 9 PM on ITV and ITVX. The four-part drama will continue to air at the same time each night, culminating in its finale on Thursday, September 5.

The cast also features Tahirah Sharif as Constable Lizzie Adams, who has transitioned from a rookie cop to a detective and new mother. Sharif, who received a Bafta nomination for her role in the first season, is recognized for her performances in Waterloo Road and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Jimmy Akingbola returns as DC Steve Bradshaw, Sarah’s former partner who goes undercover this season. Akingbola, known for his roles in Holby Blue and Bel-Air, will bring new depth to his character’s involvement in a drug investigation.

Emmett J. Scanlan joins the cast as DI Kieran Shaw, a character at odds with Sarah over the handling of Operation Perseus. Scanlan’s past credits include Hollyoaks and Peaky Blinders.

The series also stars Karl Davies, Ella Smith, Lamar Waves, Michael Karim, Stuart McQuarrie, and Bobby Lockwood in supporting roles.

Although The Tower is set in London, much of the filming for the third season took place in northern England, including locations in Liverpool, Runcorn, and Sefton. This practice of filming outside the capital has been consistent with the previous seasons.
