Asif Kapadia, the acclaimed director behind “Amy,” is unveiling his latest film, “2073,” at the Venice Film Festival this Tuesday. The genre-defying thriller, set in a dystopian future, stars Samantha Morton, Naomi Ackie, and Hector Hewie. Inspired by Chris Marker’s 1962 short film “La Jetée” — which also influenced Terry Gilliam’s “12 Monkeys” — “2073” explores a world ravaged by authoritarianism, technological overreach, and climate change.
The film presents a harrowing vision of 2073, where surveillance drones and militarized police dominate, and survivors cling to memories of a lost, freer world. Co-financed by Neon, Double Agent, and Film4, and produced by Kapadia and George Chignell, the project also features executive producers from Concordia Studio and Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films.
