Marvel Studios made a major comeback earlier this year with the summer release of “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which has shattered box office records, earning $1.2 billion and setting a new benchmark for R-rated films. This performance also marks Marvel’s highest-grossing film since “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which earned $1.9 billion in 2021.
Given the success of “No Way Home,” expectations for its sequel are understandably high. The film not only surpassed $1 billion but also became the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time upon its release. As a result, both Sony and Marvel are keen to advance with “Spider-Man 4.”
Recent months have seen speculation about the sequel’s plot and director. It is now confirmed that Jon Watts, who directed the previous Spider-Man films, will not return for the fourth installment. Watts, who recently spoke about his new project “Wolfs,” explained his decision by reflecting on the unique success of “No Way Home.”
Watts acknowledged the monumental reaction to “No Way Home,” expressing his belief that replicating such a moment is nearly impossible: “That was such a specific moment in time, and the reaction to that movie was just so unbelievable. It’s never going to be like this, ever again.”
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” was a pivotal film in Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, featuring the returns of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men alongside Tom Holland. The film’s groundbreaking multiversal elements and exceptional reception set a high bar for future installments.
With Watts’ departure, speculation continues about who will direct “Spider-Man 4.” Despite earlier expectations that Watts would direct both the next Spider-Man film and Marvel’s “Fantastic Four” reboot, he has stepped away from both projects. His tenure as director of “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” remains highly acclaimed, marking a successful era for the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
