The 1928 short film “Steamboat Willie,” which first introduced Mickey Mouse to audiences, has entered the public domain, prompting a surge of low-budget horror movies exploiting this iconic character in dark and twisted ways. Among these films is “Screamboat,” a new horror feature from the creators behind “Terrifier 2” and “The Mean One.”
David Howard Thornton, known for his role as Art The Clown, stars as a malevolent version of Steamboat Willie. In “Screamboat,” a deranged mouse terrorizes a group of New Yorkers aboard a late-night ferry, creating chaos on an otherwise peaceful journey. The film’s plot revolves around whether the ferry’s diverse group of passengers can stop this killer creature.
Director Steven LaMorte promises a blend of practical effects, miniatures, and advanced virtual production to bring the horrifying version of Steamboat Willie to life. The film utilizes both puppet and costume elements for its in-camera practical creature effects.
The cast includes Allison Pittel (“Stream”), Amy Schumacher (“The Mean One”), Jesse Posey (“Teen Wolf”), Jesse Kove (“Cobra Kai”), Rumi C Jean-Louis (“Hightown”), Jarlath Conroy (“Romero’s Day of the Dead”), and Charles Edwin Powell (“The Exorcist III”).
