Warner Bros. has unveiled the teaser for the highly awaited live-action adaptation of the blockbuster video game, now officially titled A Minecraft Movie. The teaser, which currently holds the top spot on YouTube’s trending list, has sparked a wave of discussion, though much of it has been critical.
Following the disappointing performance of the recent video game-to-film adaptation, Borderlands, there is palpable skepticism surrounding A Minecraft Movie. Nevertheless, Warner Bros. is optimistic about their latest venture.
According to the studio’s YouTube announcement, A Minecraft Movie is the inaugural live-action adaptation of Minecraft, a game that has achieved unprecedented success as the best-selling video game of all time. The film is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, directed by Jared Hess.
The cast features Jason Momoa as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, Jack Black as Steve, Emma Myers as Natalie, Oscar nominee Danielle Brooks as Dawn, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen as Henry. Jennifer Coolidge also stars in a supporting role.
The plot centers around four individuals—Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn—who find themselves transported through a mysterious portal into the Minecraft universe, an imaginative and cubic world where creativity is key to survival. To return to their reality, they must navigate this strange realm, fend off threats from Piglins and Zombies, and team up with the skilled crafter Steve. Their journey will test their creativity and resourcefulness, skills they will need to harness both in Minecraft and their everyday lives.
A Minecraft Movie is set to premiere exclusively in theaters and IMAX in North America on April 4, 2025, and will release internationally starting April 2, 2025. The film is a production of Vertigo Entertainment, On The Roam, and Mojäng Aktiebolag, and will be distributed globally by Warner Bros. Pictures and by Legendary East in China.
