Peacock has officially ordered a new comedic mystery series inspired by the 1989 film The Burbs, which starred Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. The series will feature Keke Palmer in a leading role and is being produced by NBCUniversal’s streaming service.
Palmer will portray one half of a young married couple who return to the husband’s childhood home. Their peaceful life is disrupted by new neighbors who reveal hidden secrets and introduce dangerous threats, transforming their once-quiet neighborhood into a source of tension and intrigue.
The original film, directed by Joe Dante and written by Dana Olsen, garnered mixed reviews from critics but achieved box office success upon its release. Over the years, it has gained a cult following.
The series adaptation will be developed by Celeste Hughley, known for her work on Palm Royale and Dead to Me, who will also serve as an executive producer alongside Brian Grazer, Kristen Zolner, and Natalie Berkus from Imagine Entertainment; Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, and Aimee Carlson from Fuzzy Door Productions; and Keke Palmer. Olsen will take on the role of co-executive producer.
Fuzzy Door Productions is also known for producing the series Ted, which is based on MacFarlane’s film about a man and his talking teddy bear.
The creative team behind the project is supported by a range of representation: Hughley is repped by UTA, Kaplan Perrone Entertainment, and Hansen Jacobson; Palmer by 3 Arts Entertainment, Luna PR, and Hertz Lichtenstein; MacFarlane and Fuzzy Door by WME and Jackoway Austen; and Olsen by attorney Daniel Riviera.
