Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the first trailer for the highly anticipated adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, Nickel Boys. Directed by RaMell Ross, the film is slated for a limited theatrical release on October 25 before becoming available on Prime Video. The cast includes Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
The story follows the bond between two young men at a segregated reform school in 1960s Florida. The screenplay, adapted by Ross and Maya Krinsky, remains true to Whitehead’s novel. Producers include Joslyn Barnes, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and David Levine, with Brad Pitt among the executive producers.
Nickel Boys premiered at the Telluride Film Festival last month and will open the New York Film Festival on September 27. The Hollywood Reporter’s Lovia Gyarkye praised Ross for his deft adaptation of Whitehead’s work, highlighting themes of Black boyhood and the significance of community. Ross, known for his Oscar-nominated documentary Hale County This Morning, This Evening, brings his unique perspective to this poignant narrative.
