The excitement surrounding South Korean cinema continues with the highly anticipated sequel, Veteran 2: I, The Executioner. Starring Hwang Jung-min, known for his role in Kill Boksoon, the film returns with him reprising his role as police detective Seo Do-cheol. The sequel is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend, before its official release in North American theaters on September 27.

The trailer for Veteran 2 promises another intense, action-packed experience, featuring relentless characters and high-stakes scenarios. This installment follows Seo Do-cheol as he leads a major crimes unit alongside new recruit Officer Park Sun-woo, portrayed by Jjung Hae-in. The plot thickens with a new serial killer wreaking havoc in South Korea. The investigation intensifies following the murder of a professor, which provides the police with crucial leads.

The film is directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, who returns to the franchise nearly a decade after the original Veteran made a significant impact at film festivals. Renowned for his action films such as Battleship Island and Escape From Mogadishu, Ryoo also penned the script for this sequel. His return is highly anticipated, with early screenings at the Cannes Film Festival already drawing comparisons to notable action films like John Wick 4. Critics have praised the sequel, with Screen Daily’s Tim Grierson calling it a “flawless” follow-up that “surpasses the original.”
